A denim jacket made from beautiful starched 12.5oz Japanese selvage denim. Kurabo Mills in Japan has recreated an old denim fabric with this denim. The original denim was invented on the West Coast of the USA and dates back to the gold rush era. With around 120 years under its belt, we can only assume it looked pretty weathered. After reaching Kurabo, it was analyzed in detail with the aim of recreating the look of the denim when it was fresh from the loom. Known for his meticulous eye for detail, Kurabo was probably best suited for the task. What Kurabo discovered is that a lot of it came from the character, the type of spinning used and the color of the weft threads. By the standards of the time, ring-spun yarn had an uneven structure and thickness. It was also discovered that the weft thread was far from white and was probably made of unbleached cotton. Kurabo recreated the yarn structure and color of the weft and dyed the warp in indigo using 12 dips. What you see is the Vinny pleated denim jacket made from this special Kurabo fabric. The buttonholes were sewn with indigo thread, the fastening tabs with navy blue thread and the contrasting hems with tobacco colored thread. A yarn combination that is extremely beautiful when the jacket is still unwashed. With wear, the Inidgo buttonholes fade, while the navy tabs and tobacco stitching retain their colors, creating beautiful depth to the hems.
