The origins of Persol startet in 1917 when Giuseppe Ratti, photographer and owner of Optik Berry, began an adventure that should bring him international success. He started with a small safety glasses manufacture in a small yard of a house in Via Caboto, but with the advancement of sunglass lenses the desire for creating truly revolutionary sunglasses in high quality and with a perfect fit grow. 1938 was finally the birth of the brand Persol. The name was derived from the Italian “per il sole” to bring the sunscreen effect to advantage.

The famous model 649 was established in 1957. It had been designed for tram drivers in Turin, who needed big glasses to protect against airstream and dust. The highly innovative design was an instant success, and was copied by many competitors over the years. In 1961, then finally started the great triumph, as the Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni, wore a Model 649 in the film classic Divorzio all’ italiana.
